Modern Maritime Piracy Trends

Modern Maritime Piracy

Piracy remains a real concern in today’s maritime industry, but it rarely looks like the hijackings many people imagine. Most modern incidents involve small groups targeting vessels close to shore, at anchor, or during slow-speed operations. Regions such as the Gulf of Guinea and parts of Southeast Asia continue to see incidents, often developing quickly and with little warning.

Because of this, prevention relies heavily on awareness. Trained crews understand how to recognise unusual activity early, maintain effective watchkeeping, and follow clear security procedures. Simple measures, such as proper access control, good lighting, and clear communication often make the difference when protecting your vessel.

STCW security training ensures seafarers know how to respond calmly and correctly if a situation changes. It gives crews a practical understanding of their security duties, supports the Ship Security Officer, and helps ensure the vessel remains compliant with international requirements.

Consistent training and preparation remain essential for protecting the ship, the crew, and the voyage.

Further Your Knowledge On Piracy Risks

One of the best ways for a vessel to safely transit a high risk area is with crew that are trained is risks and drilled in the responses that need to be followed in the event of an emergency.

Our STCW Proficiency in Security awareness and Proficiency in Security Duties courses cover the transiting of high risk areas and provide learners with the knowledge of the risks and advised procedures for transiting these areas.

Our courses are approved by the Norwegian flag, and accepted by many more!
